Whole Home Audio - Changed for the Better!

Over the 22 years we've been doing residential A/V, we've seen many changes in the area of whole-home audio. Traditionally, "whole-home audio" meant having a centralized stack of audio gear that connected to in-ceiling speakers and volume knobs in each room with audio. Once the trend to mobile devices and streaming music arrived, volume knobs were eliminated, and mobile devices became both the content streamer and volume control device. Even so, all the gear remained in a closet or basement back room.
The trend today has moved from a multi-room receiver in the back room to single zone receivers in each room. These are typically mounted behind a flat panel TV, and default to TV sound when the TV is on. When the TV is off, the local room speakers can easily stream audio individually, or across multiple rooms. Simplicity is key here...the TV remote controls volume when the TV is on, and the mobile device controls volume when streaming. No more keypads or clunky control systems.
